Implementing a Workplace Smoking Policy Whether smoking is restricted in the workplace by employer choice or state law, certain guidelines can be followed to help create a harmonious setting for both smokers and non-smokers: Allow employees to smoke only during work breaks or lunch Schedule break times so that smokers and non-smokers have the opportunity for separation Restrict smoking to specific areas such as an outside area away from main passageways Facilitate job reassignment or other reasonable accommodations for smoke-sensitive employees Whichever guidelines employers choose to follow, recognize the rights of both smokers and non-smokers with policies and practices
